Gardening is all about growing and cultivating plants. There are ornamental plants which are grown for their flowers and foliage and then useful plants which are grown to be eaten such as vegetables and fruits. A combination of the two can produce a fantastic looking and useful garden in which a gardener can excel with his or her green fingers and spend many beneficial hours creating their own oasis.

Gardening has pretty much been around since the beginning of time, whether it be for foods or flowers. Present day gardening tends to revolve around having a balanced garden and a small private eco system one can retire to away from the normal day to day hustle of life.

Knowledge and experience is the key to successful gardening. All can be gained by anyone regardless of age and gender. Any garden is a blank canvas where the gardener can create his or her own masterpiece. With the necessary gardening tools, patience, planning and dedication one can create their own slice of heaven to be enjoyed for many years. Once the gardening bug has bitten you, life will never be the same.

To many gardening is seen as a chore at best and that is a shame. I must confess that many years ago I was one of those. Never would I have the time to dig, plant or weed a garden. Yes in the summer I enjoyed sitting outside with a nice cool drink catching the sun’s rays, but never did I fully appreciate the serenity and beauty of a garden. In fact I just took the garden for granted and allowed my family to “waste” their time working it.

After a working accident to my shoulder I was left at home with a lot of time on my hands. One afternoon there was a gardening show on the television hosted by Percy Thrower. His enthusiasm got under my skin, and through not wanting to get piles from sitting on the sofa all day, I made first venture in to the garden. Nothing major though. Just cit the grass and planted some carrots. The lawn looked nice and did give me some self satisfaction. But it was the progress of the carrots growing that hooked me in to the whole gardening thing. I felt parental towards them and even found myself talking to them once in a while. And when they matured, boy o boy did they taste good. Too this day I have never managed to grow carrots that tasted as good. Anyway to cut a long story short, the gardening bug had bitten me and 20 years down the road I’m in the garden at every opportunity. For those of you that believe gardening is a chore, never say never!

As well as being a self indulgent hobby, gardening also offers many health benefits. In today’s society everything is cut and thrust moving at breakneck speed. Stress has become a prevalent illness throughout society and needs to be dealt with before dire consequences result. Stress is a catalyst for many other ailments and gardening proves to be a great reliever of stress. When gardening you can be alone, make your own decisions and more importantly work to your own time schedule. There is no stress in the garden. A stress free environment creates a stress free soul. Working and preparing a garden requires an investment of time and attention taking your mind off other issues.

Exercise is a must for healthy living, and though gardening is nothing like running a marathon, digging the borders or vegetable plot will wake up many muscles you never knew you had. Being in the garden exposes the gardener to fresh arm and sunshine. All the ingredients for a healthy life. And lets not forget the old saying “you are what you eat”. Growing your own vegetables will give you a continuous supply of these vital food stuffs for the body, packed with vitamins and minerals. And having grown them yourself you will know exactly what is in them and how they were grown. There is no taste like a home grown vegetable either.

Medical tests have also been carried out and it has been discovered that many people recover a lot quicker from illness when they are exposed to outdoor gardening. It is just the whole scenario of gardening that the act has to be healthy. Gardening gets you outside in the fresh air, gets you working the muscles, helps you relax and relieve stress and teaches you patience. In my opinion it’s just a shame that the schools do not introduce gardening to the children at earlier ages.

Initially gardening can be a very cheap hobby to pursue. Just basic tools such as a wheelbarrow, fork and spade will not cost the earth and they are all you need to start a small garden project. However as you develop your gardening skills and develop your garden, more jobs are required to be done and new projects introduced. This is where gardening can become expensive. But only initially.

When you expand your gardening equipment range you should always be looking to the future. Try to buy gardening tools that are not specific. By this we mean it is better to buy gardening tools and equipment that can be used for multiple jobs. This way you will be getting the most from your investment.

Gardening hand tools are small and cheap to buy. A small hand held fork will only set you back a couple of quid. But if you buy quality it will last you a life time. So when purchasing always go for quality and if that means spending just that little more, then do so. But the real expense in gardening comes with powered tools such as the lawn mower and petrol strimmer.

When buying powered gardening equipment always buy the best you can afford and take care of it properly. Something like a petrol strimmer requires regular maintenance and careful storage. The initial cost of a new petrol strimmer is high but if you have it for strimming for the nest 20 years, mathematics will tell you it was a cheap buy. This is why it is essential for you to properly take care of any gardening tools and machinery. View them as a long term investment.

Gardening can encompass different styles using different techniques and locations as well as styles. Each different technique is based around the growing of plants and despite your location or situation gardening can be carried out by all.

Residential gardening is a form of gardening that is carried at the home or near the home. Most houses will have a garden to the back or front of them and this is where the gardening is carried out. However some homes do not have a garden and other solutions have to be found for gardening. It is not unusual to see roof gardens or patio gardens. Residential gardening can also take the form of window boxes or even a balcony garden with a flat.

Container gardening is extremely popular and is basically the growing of plants in containers, indoors or outdoors. It doesn’t matter if you do not have a garden with container gardening. Plants and vegetables can be grown in these containers and be situated on balconies or on sunny window ledges. In fact to many, container gardening is the perfect form of gardening. It is easy to carry out, plant diseases can be easily maintained and there is a significant lack of weed management required. Also with container gardening the gardener has complete control over moisture levels and temperature control.

Impact gardening is very popular where space is at a minimum. But even in a small space, if the space is used fully and to great effect by keeping the plants close together, it is a thriving gardening technique. Not only will it look great but an impact garden requires very little maintenance to flourish and maintain.

Indoor gardening is all about growing plants indoors. This can be in a home, a greenhouse or even a conservatory. The aim is to transfer the beauty of nature to the indoors. As well as having the beauty indoors, the plants can also purify the air within their environment.

Water gardening is the growing of aquatic plants which can be used in an adapted pool or pond. This type of gardening is relatively new to me, but one which has completely gripped me. There is nothing like having water and the sound of water in your garden. But if you can enhance your water feature even further by the growing of aquatic plants the visual senses are stimulated as well. Growing the right plants will also help your fish thrive and be happy. Creating a complex water feature with waterfalls and such is a mammoth task to undertake, but once completed it can make any garden.

Rock gardening is something every gardener will undertake sometime. Perfect for any section of a garden a successful rock garden just makes any garden. You can create a small mountain and even have a waterfall running down it. And at night time with lights, the rock garden is just mesmerizing.
